2016-2017 Student Chapter Updates!

Since 2005, Level’s Chapter Program has motivated tomorrow’s lawyers and change-makers to champion social justice causes and to make a positive impact in their communities.

This year, our Chapters made significant contributions by organizing speaker events, hosting panel discussions, and publishing a student journal on the important topic of Women’s Rights worldwide.

Highlights from the year include the University of Saskatchewan’s panel discussion on women’s reproductive rights; the University of Victoria’s campaign on family reintegration for women migrants (where 128 students came out to write letters—in the rain!); and the University of Ottawa’s International Women’s Day panel focused on women in law—where Level's very own co-founder, Yasmin Shaker, and Executive Director, Brittany Twiss, shared their experiences and insights.

We would like to recognize the outstanding efforts of the Université de Montréal's (U de M) Chapter executive, lead by Patricia Yao, for spearheading the development of a journal highlighting various women's rights issues. We were impressed with the dedication of Patricia and her team, who spent the better part of the academic year organizing, editing and polishing the journal, and ultimately providing an opportunity for U de M students to think critically about how to overcome the systemic barriers to equality and women's empowerment.

A special thank you to Queen’s Law Outreach (QLO)--which was started in 2016 by a group of students interested in demystifying the legal profession for youth in the Kingston community--for their donation to the Dare to Dream program! QLO aims to promote access to justice by making the legal profession seem more accessible to students who may not have considered it as a career path or had the opportunity to interact with people in the legal profession. This year, the group held an LSAT book drive with the proceeds going to the Dare to Dream program. Thank you for your generous support!

Congratulations to our 2016-2017 cohort of exemplary leaders! We look forward to working with Level's Student Chapters next year to think critically and raise awareness about the "justice sector's role in advancing reconciliation."
