Thomson Reuters-Level Partnership Announcement

Level is excited to announce our funding partnership with Thomson Reuters. This partnership will support Level’s mission of providing social justice and access to justice focused education and training to law students across Canada. For 2023-2024, Thomson Reuters has committed financial and volunteer support to Level’s Social Justice Fellowship Program (“SJFP”), a program that helps future lawyers, leaders, and change-makers champion social justice causes and make positive contributions to their communities. Focusing on a variety of equity issues in the legal field, SJFP increases law students’ knowledge, skills, and experience to become social justice advocates.

Allan Akizuki, Information Management Consultant at Thomson Reuters and a key supporter of the partnership has stated, “We are extremely proud to be supporting the Social Justice Fellowship Program at Level, an organization that is aligned with Thomson Reuters’ commitment to improving access to justice. This partnership strengthens that commitment in Canada and provides students with the skills and opportunities to make a positive impact on social justice issues while in law school and throughout their careers.”

With support from Thomson Reuters, the Level Team is thrilled to be expanding SJFP across law schools in Canada and facilitate better training and resources for law students across the country. The funding will allow more placements and opportunities for law students who are truly committed to creating a more equitable justice system. In accomplishing this goal, we are honoured to have Thomson Reuters’ generous support.

More About SJFP

Through the SJFP, Level aims to create a steady stream of dedicated social justice advocates entering the legal field. Law students play an important role in achieving substantive social change within and beyond the legal field. By engaging in the SJFP, fellows have the opportunity to learn about social justice issues, engage their campuses, perform outreach to the broader community, refine their leadership skills, and become better advocates for social justice.

The SJFP does this in the following ways:

  • It provides information and training for Fellows to equip them with the relevant skills;

  • It empowers fellows to organize social justice projects that benefit their specific areas of interest, talents, passions, and potential futures; and

  • It facilitates participation in the broader community for fellows to raise awareness about pressing social justice issues.

In the past, Fellows have organized projects around issues such as environmental justice, accessibility in the justice system, rights of the precariously housed, and more. In each instance, Fellows were enriched by their experiences and continue to create change today.
