Want to know what it's like to be a part of Level's team? Vancouver Indigenous Youth Outreach Program ("IYOP") Facilitator, Shawnee Monchalin shares her experience below. Shawnee is a lawyer at Miller Thomson in Vancouver. She is Algonquin, Wendat and Metis and was raised on the Attiwonderonk Territory. Shawnee is a member of Miller Thomson's Commercial Litigation Group. She has a diverse commercial litigation practice with a focus on Aboriginal, administrative, and environmental matters.

Shawnee: "IYOP is a missing piece that fills a major gap between the law and Indigenous youth in Canada. The program is thoughtful and engaging, and it provides a safe space for Indigenous students to ask questions and begin to grasp concepts about the law and their place within it. As a Program Facilitator, I am excited to teach this program to students, but also teach my co-workers and friends. The program is rooted in the understanding that Canadian law alone cannot combat the inequities we see in the justice system for Indigenous people, but when society as a whole understands, respects and implements Indigenous law that has existed since time immemorial, equity is more achievable. Students are excited to learn about the program, and know that their Indigenous laws and ways of knowing are just as important and necessary. I hope to continue working as an IYOP Facilitator in future years and watch it grow to a bigger program reaching as many Indigenous youth as possible."

If you are passionate about access to justice and engaging with youth, Level's new Social Justice Program Manager role provides an amazing opportunity to partially manage the day-to-day of IYOP and work with amazing lawyers like Shawnee! Level is looking for a motivated, energetic and hard-working individual to join our small, dynamic team. Apply now!
