Happy Holidays from Level!
Dear Friends,
2015 was a momentous year for our organization. As you know, we recently unveiled our new name, logo and website. Canadian Lawyers Abroad’s evolution to Level reflects our organization’s role in creating opportunities for justice and substantive equality both in Canada and abroad. We have been thrilled with the positive feedback about our new brand, and thank you for your support during the transition process.

Level also reached new heights this year in our program delivery and impact. We engaged and collaborated with more community members, university students, legal professionals and international civil society organizations than ever before to advance innovative social justice initiatives.
Through our celebrated
program, we empowered more than 150 of Canada’s First Nations, Métis and Inuit youth in Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan to see the justice system in a new light and to believe in their own capacity to succeed. Over 80 legal professionals improved their Aboriginal cultural competency and
donated hundreds of thousands of dollars of in-kind mentoring support.
By building trusting relationships we created and continue to create powerful dialogues between Aboriginal communities and justice professionals, supporting the path to reconciliation. This year, we were excited to expand the program further to the Chippewas of Rama First Nation and Stoney Nakoda First Nation. We give special thanks to
the Elders in each of our program locations for welcoming our organization and volunteers into your communities.
Level also worked with law students and other non-profit organizations to elevate human rights issues worldwide. For example, in 2014-15 our on-campus
raised awareness about the rights of refugees in 15 universities and eight provinces by conducting research and hosting conferences. In 2015-16, Chapters are tackling the issue of “
human trafficking and forced labour
” by hosting documentary film screenings and panel discussions in their communities, as well as contributing research reports to a nation-wide student journal.
This past summer, we provided 23 law students with in-the-field learning opportunities in Africa, Asia, the United States and Canada, where they supported grassroots efforts to increase access to justice and combat poverty, inequality and exploitation. Level's
2016 summer internship placements
were announced last week, including returning partners the International Commission of Jurists – Kenya, Ghana Centre for Democratic Development, Tibetan Centre for Human Rights & Democracy, Mikisew Cree First Nation and Chiefs of Ontario, to name a few.
As Level continues to grow and develop our innovative projects both in Canada and abroad, we are truly in need of your support. Every dollar donated will support Level’s efforts to combat injustice and promote equality in rights and opportunities.
Thank you for making 2015 an incredible year. Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday season.
Yours very truly,
Brittany Twiss
