Avocats sans frontieres: Initial Experiences in Quebec City
I arrived in Quebec City in May. The richness of this historic city’s culture is evident at every street corner. The smell of la boulangerie in the air and the feel of cobblestones under my feet remind me that I am not in Ontario anymore. Quebec is full of old world charm and I enjoy its distinctively French culture.

I have loved my time spent at the office with avocats sans frontieres (Lawyers Without Borders Canada). Avocats sans frontieres is a non-governmental organization that seeks to further human rights defense of vulnerable groups through promoting access to justice. Avocats sans frontieres works in a number of locations including: Guatemala, Haiti, Mali, the Caribbean and Columbia. The team I work with is comprised of a multicultural group of friendly individuals who are passionate about the protection and furthering of human rights. I feel inspired by my coworkers when I see their dedication and hard work towards our cause.
While my experience has been at times, overwhelming, it has also been extremely rewarding. My time here thus far has been full of adjustments. Being the only Anglophone in my office has provided me with many opportunities to practice my French speaking and comprehension skills. I arrived at a very exciting time for avocats sans frontieres as the organization is continuing to evolve and grow. I have been lucky enough to be entrusted with a project compiling a strategic litigation guidebook for distribution to NGOs and lawyers throughout the Caribbean. The project includes editing, summarizing and providing supplemental research for various contributions to the book. As well, I have been summarizing the guidebook to produce a smaller version of it that will function as a strategic litigation practical manual for legal practitioners. I have been meeting with various project partners and stakeholders throughout the week to solidify the vision of the book.
I have also coordinated a two-day professional development presentation on strategic litigation that was held in Jamaica a few weeks ago. I am very excited to continue my work with avocats sans frontieres. I love the feeling of purpose that my work provides and I am excited that my work will aid lawyers in their fight to protect the rights of vulnerable groups.
