2014 Student Internship Program

CLA is pleased to announce the details of our 2014 Summer Internship Program! Each year we partner with amazing organizations in Canada and around the world to provide law students with meaningful and practical work opportunities in the areas of good governance, the rule of law and human rights.

Students at the 16 law schools across Canada with active CLA Chapters are welcome to apply for an internship position. This year, we have 11 partner organizations and 18 internship positions ranging from the Ghana Center for Democratic Development in Accra to the Yukon Human Rights Commission in Whitehorse, and from ECPAT in Bangkok, Thailand to Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (Legal Division) in Iqaluit.

CLA’s summer internships are designed to be mutually beneficial for our students, who learn essential legal research and advocacy skills (among other things), and our partner organizations, who gain extra support in their endeavors to promote positive social change. Year after year, CLA receives excellent feedback from our partner organizations about our students’ high caliber work and eagerness to learn and contribute. For example, the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council, a long-standing CLA partner, appreciated this past summer’s interns’ assistance in “communicating a proposed Yukon River water quality plan to the members and communities of the Watershed Council and helping to prepare the presentation materials on the same plan for the Watershed Council’s Summit.”

CLA’s students also speak highly of the unique learning experiences gained through their respective internships. Delaney Greig, a 2013 intern from McGill University stated, “working with Mikisew Cree Government Industry Relations has been one of the most enriching, stimulating experiences of my life…I learned a great deal about the challenges First Nations people confront in defending their rights…” Kara Moen, a 2013 intern from the University of Saskatchewan, said, “this internship showed me how important it is to give children a voice in the criminal justice system. Working with Beyond Borders provided me with an incredible opportunity to see the intersection of international law, domestic legislation and corporate policy-making as they pertain to children’s rights…” To read more feedback from CLA’s past interns see their Reflections from the Field.
