About EJP
Through seven sessions, the Environmental Justice Program (“EJP”) looks at and breaks down the complexities of environmental law and justice in Canada for students aged 11 – 18. Throughout the EJP, facilitators and volunteers work with students to discuss the history of environmental justice in Canada; they look at concepts such as environmental racism, environmental law, and the role of advocacy to build a better society. We also examine and discuss the inextricable link between environmental justice and Indigenous peoples’ legal orders and knowledge as students have the opportunity to learn from Indigenous environmental justice experts.
We take learning beyond the classroom through a free field trip to a local environmental justice organization and helping students understand how they can take part in environmental justice initiatives in Canada. The program culminates in a mock negotiation circle that allows students to take on roles and represent different parties to a legal dispute. Through this, students work with law students, lawyers and environmental advocates to understand the different sides of environmental disputes. Previous students indicated the mock negotiation is their favourite part of the EJP, as it helps build up their communication, advocacy, and problem solving skills.
Overall, the EJP explores the history of environmental justice in Canada, present-day environmental issues, and solutions for the future. Together with the students and other relevant individuals, we creatively learn about and begin working towards building a more just future for people and the planet.
